Flags for flagpoles (and such) in or our day are mainly produced from two different materials, nylon and polyester. Every so often questions are asked by customers as to what material they should choose for their new banner. The purpose of this article is to provide a little more information on the above mentioned materials and their application.

Banners have been flown for centuries, if not thousands of years. Fascinatingly, the somewhat obvious purpose of flags has hardly changed over this period of time. For example, battle flags were and are flown as a means to identify and sometimes signal during times of war. The same applies to other types of flags. Interestingly, history takes us across the Pacific Ocean, into the south-eastern area of Asia, where flags were first used many, many years ago.

As mentioned above, flags are commonly produced from nylon and polyester. Based on the material alone, a distinction can be made between in- and outdoor flags. Outdoor flags are often times produced from nylon where indoor flags are commonly made from polyester. However, this rule does not necessarily apply to banners of a bigger size.

There are a few advantages to polyester that are known to those that work with this particular material. Polyester seems to be resilient, meaning that its capacity to deal with deformation / wrinkles as a result of applied energy, is substantial in comparison to other such materials. Another (practical) advantage is its ability to dry quickly. A significant disadvantage to polyester is its flammability however.

Polyester is used for the manufacturing of many other items such as: insulation, plastics, car parts, tapes, etc.

Historic flags (for flagpoles) are produced from both nylon and polyester. The same applies to U.S.-, state, international and military flags. Custom banners can be produced from both materials. Light weight polyester banners are (for the most part) more cost-effective than banners made from outdoor nylon.

When dealing with water damage in your home or business, it is important to know what kind of water you are dealing with. Then you will know if it is something you want to take on yourself or if it should be referred to a professional.

Basically, there are three types of water:

Clean – self explanatory, this is water that is clean at the source and contains to contaminants or other harmful materials. This may be from overflowing tubs or sinks, water supply lines, or appliance malfunctions. This water is safe to work with, although it should be noted that clean water may in fact become contaminated if left standing for too long, or if it comes into contact with contaminated materials.

Grey – this is water that may contain some harmful elements. If ingested by humans or animals, it could cause some health problems. This could come from toilet bowls with urine, sump pump failures, or water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.

Black – if you haven’t already guessed, this is the yucky stuff….water that is highly contaminated at the source, containing sewage, bacteria, chemicals, or fungi that can be harmful, even fatal, if ingested by humans. Black water should be solely treated by a qualified water restoration professional.

Restoration methods vary depending on the type of water involved, as well as the extent of the damage. Most homeowners may be able to handle smaller spills involving clean water; however any spill that may contain contaminants is best left to a professional.

Whole house fans are fans mounted in the ceiling that draw air up and out of the house to lower the temperature and circulate the air. These fans are often used in the place of air conditioning because they can lower the temperature by several degrees for a much lower cost than most air conditioning units.

They’re different from attic fans which are designed to vent the attic of a home. If you use a house fan, you will also need to have an attic fan or some type of adequate venting to allow the hot air pulled out of the house to escape the attic. If you don’t have adequate venting in the attic, the hot air that’s pulled into it will cause condensation and moisture problems that will damage your home.

These fans cost much less to operate than air conditioning and often cost less to purchase and install, but they do have some disadvantages. Whole house fans typically can’t cool as efficiently as air conditioning. In extremely hot weather, the temperature inside the home is still going to be very warm. With air conditioning, you can set a temperature as low as you choose and reach it. That’s not possible with a fan of any kind.

Also, if allergies are an issue then air conditioning is by far the better choice for cooling a home. House fans work pulling hot air up and out, which only works efficiently if windows are open and allow air to be pulled in from outside. When air is pulled through an air conditioning unit, it goes through a filter that can trap some allergens and irritants. Air that a house fan pulls inside comes in directly with no filtering, and will contain pollen, mold, grass and other common problems for allergy sufferers.

A third disadvantage to whole house fans is the noise. Even some models designed to run quietly are loud enough to be intrusive in everyday activities. If the fan is mounted in a high ceiling or a place where noise isn’t a problem, you don’t have allergies and you don’t need the house to be extremely cool in the summer, a house fan could be a budget-conscious choice.
