Invisible and Odorless, Radon Poses Risks to Lungs

FRIDAY, March 11 (HealthDay News) — It may be hard to think of
radiation as a present and serious environmental health concern in the
United States, much less one with the potential to affect nearly every
home in the country.

But a radioactive gas known as radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances is responsible for an estimated
21,000 lung cancer deaths every year, according to the U.S. National
Cancer Institute.

“It’s the second leading cause of lung cancer, and, for non-smokers, it
is the leading cause of lung cancer,” said Kristy Miller, a spokeswoman
for the indoor environments division of the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency. “It is invisible and odorless. It causes no symptoms. You possibly
may be breathing in high levels and not even know it.”

radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances gas is created by the breakdown of uranium in rocks, soil and
water. It seeps up through the ground and into homes through foundation
cracks and crawl spaces.

“It’s a naturally occurring decay product of uranium,” said Dr. Michael
Thun, vice president of epidemiology and surveillance research for the
American Cancer Society. “radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances is one of the avoidable known carcinogens
to which many people are exposed at a range of levels. Compared to
cigarette smoking, it’s a very small risk, but across the population, it
is a significant risk. And, it is avoidable.”

Outside, radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances seeping up from the ground floats away into the
atmosphere, causing no harm. But a building acts as a container for any
radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances seeping up from beneath it, capturing the gas and allowing it to
concentrate.

Houses in the Northeast and Midwest tend to have higher radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances levels
than those elsewhere in the United States, Thun said.

And don’t think that new homes are less likely to have dangerous levels
of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances. “Any type of home, regardless of its age or where it’s located,
has the potential of having high levels,” Miller said. “If your home has
contact with the earth, which most homes do, then your home has a chance
of having a high level of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances.”

The best bet for protecting yourself and your family from long-term
radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances gas exposure is to check for high levels in the house.

“If one lives in an area where radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances is prevalent, it’s a good idea to
have your home tested,” Thun said.

The EPA recommends a two-level test for radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances. First, a homeowner
should buy a short-term test kit, a small device that is left in the house
for two days to 90 days, depending on the kit.

The test kit, Miller said, should be put:

  • In a spot where it will have access to the same air that’s inhaled by
    the home’s occupants.
  • Away from doors and windows.
  • At a level that’s not too high nor too low.
  • On a shelf or someplace where it won’t be jostled.

At the end of the testing period, the homeowner sends the radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances kit to
a lab for analysis, Miller said.

If the test shows that the radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances level registers at 4 picocuries per
liter of air, a second test should be done, according to EPA
recommendations. The follow-up test can be another short-term test or a
long-term test, which takes more than 90 days. If the average of the two
tests remains above 4 pCi/L, then the homeowner should consider having the
house fixed.

This process, called radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances mitigation, can cost from $800 to $2,500,
depending on what must be done to the house, Miller said.

Workers will go through the house to seal up places through which radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances
can enter, including:

  • Cracks in walls and solid floors.
  • Gaps in construction joints and suspended floors.
  • Gaps around pipes.
  • Cavities inside walls.

radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances also can be vented away from the home using PVC pipes that are
sunk into the ground. “You want to take that soil gas and vent it from
underneath your home or foundation before it ever gets inside,” Miller
said.

People should re-test their houses for radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances regularly, he said,
particularly if something happens to disturb either the house or the
ground beneath it. A new addition may have been built, renovations done or
excavation performed, or the homeowner may simply have noticed that the
foundation has shifted.

People having a new house built can take preemptive measures against
potential radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances contamination by asking for certain construction
techniques and features that reduce the risk of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances.

“It’s most cost-effective to do it when you’re building a new home,”
Miller said. “Ask your builder to include radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances-resistant features.”

The most important thing to remember, the experts say, is that radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances is
just about everywhere.

It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances is a natural substance within the Earth’s crust,” Miller said.
“It’s there in the soil. The issue is, is your particular home going to
allow it to seep in?”

FRIDAY, March 11 (HealthDay News) — Brandon Smith started a radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances

heat-resistant wire closed down after 100 years in business.

Smith and his wife, who live in Battle Creek, Mich., opened their
mom-and-pop business, Michigan radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances Agency, in 2005 and now test about 15

“It’s not an easy business to get into,” Smith said. “You have to get
trained, certified and licensed, and have all your business connections in
place.” And that includes real estate agents. “They’re the ones
recommending you, so you’ve got to know a lot of them,” he said.

For his testing, which Smith said ranges from $75 to $150, electronic
monitors are placed around a house and left for two weeks. He also takes
an instant hour-by-hour readout for the homeowners. “It’s always done in
the basement, if it’s livable,” he said.

The tests are so accurate that there’s usually little need to run a
second test to confirm the findings, Smith said. “Sometimes I’ll offer to
retest if it’s close to the threshold…but that’s usually it,” he
said.

Clients usually are surprised if their home has a high radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances level and

radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances is a mystery to much of the general public, he said, “but the

It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances problem does need
to be mitigated, it’s not an immediate danger.

“One thing about radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances, it’s a long-term exposure,” he said. “However,
that means different things to different people.”

Few people shrug off a high radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances level, he said: “Pretty much
everybody mitigates these days.” And if a problem is discovered during an
inspection that’s part of a real estate transaction, “it’s negotiable,
like everything,” Smith said. “The buyers try to get the homeowners to put
in a system.”

High radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances levels are found in “quite a few” homes, Smith said. “The
big reason is the U.S. has some pretty high standards, so there are going
to be a lot of homes that don’t meet the standards,” he said. “The whole
point is to make sure everyone’s got low levels.”

The most pervasive myth about radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances that Smith said he has to knock
down is that homes without basements and homes with basements that have
doors leading outside are not susceptible to high radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances levels.

“If a house doesn’t have a basement, it still has the same vacuum
tendencies to draw in and collect radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances,” he said. “Anything attached to
the ground has the potential, even if it’s on a slab. Just because there’s
no basement doesn’t change anything.”

It’s odorless, tasteless and invisible, but kills thousands of people each year. radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances, a poisonous and naturally occurring gas, is the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers, and state officials and radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances experts say Blaine County residents are especially at risk.

“Basically, one out of two homes you drive by have high radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances levels,” said Jim Faust, project manager for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. “We don’t know if you’re going to get lung cancer, but we know what the end result could be.”

radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances is a radioactive gas produced when naturally occurring uranium in soil breaks down. It’s is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the nation, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that it causes 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year.

“It’s not nearly as dangerous as tobacco use,” said Michael Walsh, owner of Sun Valley Home Inspectors. “If it’s a second home that isn’t visited that often, the concern would be less. But if it’s a home you’re in long term and raising children, the concern would be higher.”

The EPA estimates that one in 15 homes nationwide has elevated levels of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances, defined as any level above four picocuries per liter (a unit roughly equivalent to parts per million). However, levels are much higher in Blaine County.

“Right now, at least 60 percent of the homes I test are over [that level],” said Gordon Gammel, owner of Idaho Testing Geologic in Ketchum.

Gammel said the average level in Blaine County is between eight and 10 picocuries per liter, but he’s seen levels as high as 200 over his 30 years of testing.

“The levels are sporadic by location,” he said, as levels depend on the amount of uranium in the granite underneath a home. “You will find pockets of high levels, but there is actually a great level of variation from home to home.”

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare places the average radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances level for homes in Hailey and Ketchum at about 9.6 picocuries per liter. In Ketchum, 61 percent of the 536 homes tested returned positive for elevated levels, with the highest level coming in at 222 picocuries per liter—more than 55 times the acceptable level.

The amount of snow and ice on the ground could put Blaine County residents at special risk.

It is one of the densest substances is trapped in the soil with the only escape being through cracks and crevices in a home’s foundation.

“Homes actually suck air out of the ground,” Faust said.

In the summer, radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances levels in homes can be lower due to open windows and better ventilation. That’s why homeowners should test in the winter, giving what Gammel calls a “worst-case scenario.”

Testing can be conducted by a professional such as Gammel or Walsh for roughly $100, depending on the home, but home test kits are available for $5.95 on www.radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. Radon in half tobique homes

Health: Study finds five public buildings in Maliseet community also have higher than acceptable levels of radioactive gas

TOBIQUE FIRST NATION – A disturbing new study shows that nearly half the homes in Tobique First Nation are polluted by an invisible, odourless gas that can cause lung cancer.

The band council held a special public meeting Tuesday afternoon to answer people’s concerns about radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances gas. Alongside two band councillors were several professionals who talked about the health risks and what to do to stop the naturally occurring radioactive gas from seeping underground into homes.

Due to overcrowding and the poor state of many of the houses in the Maliseet community, band councillor Darrah Bear fears up to 700 people could be affected.

“The chief and council are forced to decide between helping someone whose porch just collapsed and someone who’s been exposed to radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances gas,” Bear, who was clearly frustrated, said after the meeting at the large bingo hall. “We’re looking at the need for emergency relief funding from the federal government.”

A consultant who was hired by the council to help solve the problem suggested that the average cost of fixing each home would be about $2,000, meaning the total bill for the 150 or so polluted homes could be $300,000 – equivalent to the First Nation’s entire capital budget this year.

Making matters worse, five of six major public buildings – Tobique Child and Family Services, Tobique Headstart and Daycare, Tobique Wellness Centre, Tobique Training Centre/Elementary School and the Wolastoqewyik Healing Lodge – also have higher than acceptable levels of the gas.

The study was initiated after Health Canada decided to test public buildings after the acceptable level of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances exposure was lowered in recent years. The allowable threshold is now below 200 becquerels per cubic metre. Once it was discovered that the public buildings in Tobique First Nation were polluted, the council decided to initiate wider testing in the community.

In some cases, the findings were shocking. Seventeen homes were found to have 10 times the limit.

For Deborah Bear-Brideau, finding out her well-kept home topped the entire list was devastating. The test found that her basement, the same place her 13-year-old daughter Kendra used to spend most of her time after school and on weekends in the rec room, had an exposure level of 3,763 becquerels per cubic metre.

“When I found out, I wanted to flee, run away,” said Bear-Brideau, who also raised her now-adult son in the chalet-style home. “I was that scared.”

Bear-Brideau’s family built the home largely by themselves on a picturesque, wooded lot beside the Tobique River 16 years ago. The family, including her late father, did the carpentry and finishing work, but they hired contractors to do the foundation, plumbing and electrical work.

Bear-Brideau didn’t notice the development of large cracks because she had covered the cold basement floor with carpets. Tobique First Nation also has no building inspector to check on the quality of construction work.

Alarmed by the high levels of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances in her home, the band sent workers to seal about 65 feet of cracks in the basement floor with a sealant that looks something like black toothpaste. They also blocked an old sump pump opening and are supposed to return to do more work by one of the walls.

“I won’t let my daughter down here to use the computer or TV anymore,” said Bear-Brideau, 42, who doesn’t want to lose her home. Other than the cracks, there’s nothing that would tell you there’s something seriously wrong with the house. It’s neat, tidy and appears to be well built.

At the meeting, health officials tried to convince the 25 or so people who showed up not to panic. Barbara MacKinnon, the president and CEO of the New Brunswick Lung Association, explained that the risks increase with genetic predisposition, higher levels of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances and prolonged exposure. By far, the leading cause of lung cancer is smoking, but the combination of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances gas exposure and smoking have a big multiplier effect.

MacKinnon recommended that if a home’s radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances level is between 200 and 600 becquerels, it should be repaired within two years. If it’s over that level, she recommended having it fixed within a year.

This means closing entry points for radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances, including cracks, joints, sump pump openings and floor drains. Open fireplaces and unbalanced ventilation systems can also draw radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances gas from the ground.

Many people at the meeting asked if radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances caused other diseases – to which the answer was no.

Still, people were disturbed that they could have been living with radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances exposure for much longer than two years.

“It seems that certain people get their housing fixed faster than others around here,” said Barbara Nicholas, 60, an unemployed playwright who complained she hadn’t seen the results of her testing yet. “I don’t have the money to fix anything. You should see my subfloor. It’s like walking on a sponge.”

Metro Vows To Continue Testing Schools For Radon

By Ben Hall
Investigative Reporter

Metro school officials are using the summer to lower levels of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances gas in classrooms across Davidson County.

Maintenance crews have installed radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances fans at three schools and the health department is working to test every school.

The testing came after a NewsChannel 5 investigation revealed that Metro forgot about or ignored a law passed by the Metro council in the late 1980′s.

The law requires radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances testing at all Metro schools and has now been added to the Metro Code of Laws.

Just this month, the federal government launched a new effort to warn people about the dangers of the odorless, invisible gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Gloria Linnertz knows how deadly the gas can be.

She was by her husband’s side when he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

“We were devastated, how could this happen?” Linnertz recalled.

They immediately questioned how a healthy man who hadn’t smoked in more than 20 years could get lung cancer.

“Joe told me, he said, ‘I’m not afraid to die,’” Linnertz said.

Sadly, it did not take long.  Just six weeks later, Joe died.

Doctors were the first to tell Gloria that her husband’s cancer might have been the result of the naturally occurring gas called radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances.

“I tested the house.  It was high.  I tested again, and it came back even higher,” Linnertz remembers.

Their home of 18 years had radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances levels four times higher than the EPA action level.

She’s now convinced radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances killed her husband, and the EPA believes it kills more than 20,000 people every year.

That’s more than the number of people killed in drunk driving accidents.

“I had no idea what radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances was, or what it could do.  I was very confident in my ignorance,” Linnertz said.

She is now part of an organization called CANSAR which seeks to warn people about the dangers of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances.

She travels the country with pictures of people who died from lung cancer and who were exposed to high levels.

“Tennessee has some of the highest, Middle Tennessee has some of the highest levels in the country,” Linnertz said.

She has family in our area, and was surprised when she saw our series of reports that revealed Metro schools knew it had a serious radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances problem in 1989, but hadn’t tested in more than 20 years.

“The EPA has suggested this many years ago that all schools need to be tested,” Linnertz said.

In fact just this month, the EPA launched a new nationwide effort to protect people from radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances gas asserting once again that all schools should be tested.

Metro School Board Chair Gracie Porter says after NewsChannel 5 Investigates revealed an apparently overlooked law that required radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances testing, more than a third of all Metro schools have now been tested.

Many of the schools have high levels.

Forty one schools have rooms above the EPA action level.

Tests show 21 other schools in which every classroom tested, meets the EPA standard.

Metro has put in seven radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances fans at three schools.  They cost about $1,000 each to install.

“The cost concerns me, but also safety concerns me,” said School Board Chair Gracie Porter.

“As we move forward with the testing, I think it’s a good thing I really do.”

Porter said Metro will find the money to make sure schools are safe, and they will all be tested.

It makes Gloria Linnertz happy.

She said too often people ignore a gas you can’t see or smell — despite what it can do.

“There are people all over the country who didn’t know they were living with high levels of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances until they were diagnosed with lung cancer,” Linnertz said.

NewsChannel 5 has arranged it so people in our viewing area can get half price radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances test kits mailed to directly to their homes.

It has agreed to sell test kits to people in our viewing area for $7.95.

Here in Nashville, the health department sells them for $5.

Local hardware stores sell them for $15 or more.

Many Indiana homes test high for radon

0

INDIANAPOLIS – You may be in danger of getting lung cancer and not even know it.

Thousand of Indiana homes are sitting on radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances, a colorless, odorless gas that experts say is almost as bad as smoking.

You would think that with something this hazardous and widespread, there would be strict regulations. But in Indiana, there are no requirements to test homes schools or offices for radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances. Testing is optional.

That’s a scary proposition, considering radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances leads to an estimated 21,000 deaths each year. You can’t see it or smell it, but if you live with radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances long enough, you’ll eventually find out if there are high levels in your home.

“It damages your lungs and creates cancer,” said Deanna French, radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances technician with Micro Air, Inc.

“We’ll come back to the lab and put them in this chamber and a computer program will read how much radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. French says radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances is usually measured in what’s called picocuries and that any building that tests above four picocuries per liter should have a mitigation system installed.

‘radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances is a naturally occurring gas that’s caused by the radioactive breakdown of uranium and it comes up through the soil and into the air and will get into your home and get trapped in your home,” she said.

She says central Indiana falls in Zone 1, which means homes and businesses here have the highest potential for elevated radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances levels, testing between 4 to 10 picocuries per liter.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s an old house or a new house, or a drafty house or a tight house and you’ll never know until you test for it,” she said.

Four picocuries per liter is the level where experts say you need to take action and they say most of the homes in Broad Ripple that don’t have mitigation systems are coming back as high as ten.

“Houses actually suck in soil gas,” said Lorand Magyar, Affordable radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. Federal Agencies Launch Plan to Reduce Radon in Homes, Schools

0

On Monday, the EPA reported the federal government is launching an initiative known as the Federal radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances Action Plan to help American people and families tackle the growing problem of radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances in their homes and other public locations.

The plan would provide aid to about 7.5 million homes and buildings across the county. A total of nine federal government agencies are teaming up to help bring more information and aid about radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances, which is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers, claiming nearly 21,000 lives each year. The partnering agencies include the EPA, the Departments of Defense, Agriculture, Health and Human Services, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Veteran Affairs, Interior, and the General Services Administration.

The Federal radon (Radon (pronounced /?re?d?n/, RAY-don) is a chemical element with symbol Rn and atomic number 86.
